 BARIATRIC SURGERY

Countless weight loss regimes, different types of diets, hour-long exercises and your BMI still points at 40? It feels frustrating when none of these helps you climb your way out of obesity, doesn’t it?

Obesity is a serious health concern that is emerging in our state of Kerala. This is largely attributable to an unhealthy diet and lifestyle. Heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke are a few dangerous weight-related health problems.

Amongst those who are morbidly obese, a diet and exercise alone are often not sufficient!

If you are a morbidly obese person or suffer from weight-related health problems, and proper diet and exercise regimes do not help, a BARIATRIC SURGERY could be your way back to a healthier life!

WHAT IS A BARIATRIC SURGERY?

Bariatric surgery is a weight-loss surgery that follows the basic principle of restricting food intake and decreasing the absorption of food in the stomach and intestines.

As a result of weight loss, weight-related issues such as heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure can be controlled.

WHEN IS A BARIATRIC SURGERY NECESSARY?

Bariatric surgery isn't for everyone who is overweight! Bariatric surgery may be deemed necessary when a proper diet and exercise regime hasn’t helped. Doctors advise it if you meet certain medical guidelines, and are willing to make a permanent lifestyle and dietary changes.

Bariatric surgery can be an option if

  • You are excessively obese (BMI > 40)
  • Your BMI is around 30-39.9 and you suffer serious health issues because of your weight

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF BARIATRIC SURGERIES?

There are four types of bariatric surgeries:

  • Gastric Sleeve Surgery - A permanent weight loss surgery that reduces stomach capacity and food intake.
  • Gastric Bypass Surgery - The most commonly performed bariatric surgery worldwide.
  • Lap Band Surgery - The safest type of bariatric surgery that requires routine follow up for band adjustments.
  • Duodenal Switch Surgery - A type of bariatric surgery that removes a large portion of the stomach and changes the digestive tract.

After considering the benefits and risks of each type of surgery, you and the doctor can come into a mutual agreement.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT WILL I BE ABLE TO LOSE?

It may be possible to lose half, or even more, of your excess weight within two years!

The amount of weight you lose depends on the type of surgery and your change in lifestyle habits.

Duodenal switch surgery, gastric sleeve surgery, and gastric bypass are very similar to each other with 65% to 70% excess weight loss after 1 year. Lap Band Surgery allows a 40% excess weight loss after a year. The type of surgery that is most suitable for your body will be assessed by the doctor.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO STAY IN HOSPITAL?

Thanks to today’s medical advancements, most bariatric surgeries are laparoscopic.

You may have to stay in the hospital for just 2 to 3 days and you can get back to normal activities in 3 to 5 weeks. However, it will take longer in case it is open surgery.

When compared to open surgery, laparoscopic surgeries ensure earlier recovery, involve fewer extensive cuts, and cause minimal tissue damage.
