How To Inject Insulin




If you or your loved one has type 1 diabetes, or type 2 diabetes and not controlled with oral medications , insulin injection shouldn’t be an unfamiliar thing for you! 

 

To deliver an insulin dose, you have to use the night syringe to draw the correct dose of Insulin, Choose the ideal injection sites and learn the correct injection technique. 

 

Here are some pointers to remember: 

 

  1. Inject insulin into the Fat planes just below the skin by taking a thick pinch of skin fold.
  2. Allow insulin to thaw (after removing from the refrigerator)  before injection
  3. Cloudy insulins should be mixed thoroughly before injection

 

To safely inject insulin, follow these instructions: 

 

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  2. Get all your supplies.
  3. Pull the syringe plunger down to the recommended units.
  4. Insert the syringe needle into the vial.
  5. Push the plunger down to inject air (this allows the insulin to be drawn more easily). 
  6. Turn the vial upside down and pull the plunger down to withdraw insulin.
  7. Tap the syringe gently to remove the bubbles and check if the dosage is accurate.
  8. Pick a clean and fatty area as your injection site. (Outer aspect of upper arm, abdomen, anterior thigh, buttocks etc)
  9. Pinch the skin and position the needle in at 90º angle.
  10. Inject the insulin slowly and steadily until it is all in.
  11. Leave the syringe in place for 10 seconds after injecting.
  12. If you notice minor bleeding after the injection, apply light pressure to the area 
  13. Ensure that the used needle is deposited into a sharps bin.



Keep your insulin away from heat and light. Report any changes in your health and discuss how your diabetes plan is working for you each time you visit a doctor.
