Newborn Care Week is celebrated every year from 15 to 21 November. The primary aim of celebrating is to raise awareness about the importance of newborn care for child survival and development.
The first 28 days of life (neonatal period) is the most crucial period for a child as it lays the foundation for lifelong health and development. The baby is learning about life and the surroundings so the care given should be of top quality.
Here are a few tips on how to take care of your newborn:
- A newborn baby should be fed 8-12 times in a 24-hour period as their appetite is increasing with time
- If you notice a cough, inconsolable crying, difficulty breathing, decreased responsiveness or a significant change in the feeding pattern, please call a doctor
- It is a good practice to follow your baby’s sleeping routine. Go to bed early and sleep when your baby sleeps
- Never shake your newborn, whether in play or in frustration. Shaking can cause bleeding in the brain and even death.
- The golden tip: Take good care of yourself so you can give the best care for your baby
- Exclusive breast feeding is crucial from first day of life till 5 months for physical and brain development.
- Always Vaccinate on time.
- The first milestone new born will achieve is social smile ie recognizing & smiling at mother around 6-8 weeks.
- It is normal to pass stool 3 times a day or once in 3 days provided the stool is semi solid.
- If Baby is excessively sleeping ,not feeding or crying inconsolably.consult Doctor immediately.
