EMERGENCY ROOM: 3:00 AM...
“Doctor please take this pain away”, she cried as she curled up in bed.
“Is it gas, doctor?”, asked her mother instinctively.
“Let me examine her. Don’t worry”, I replied.
“Does it hurt here? What about here?”, I asked the little girl pressing different points on her belly.
“It is like someone is stabbing me over and over again, just that it gets deeper, doctor.”
“Nurse, take a CT scan immediately”
“Okay Doctor”, said the nurse as she rushed out of the room.
30 MINUTES LATER…
“Nurse, please prepare her for a surgery”, I said as soon as I saw the report.
She was suffering from appendicitis and we had to remove her appendix.
Read this article to find out if you or your loved ones suffer from this terrifying condition.
An appendix is a small, tube-shaped pouch of tissue that is located in the lower- right abdomen. Believe it or not, an infection in this little organ can even lead to DEATH!
Appendicitis is a condition where the appendix is inflamed, swollen or filled with pus. Anybody can develop appendicitis. However, it is more prevalent in people between the ages of 10 and 30.
There are some common symptoms reported by patients suffering from appendicitis. In most cases, it all starts with a stabbing pain in the right lower abdomen. Other common symptoms of appendicitis are loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and fever.
Besides these common symptoms, some people experience other symptoms such as irregular bowel movements and diarrhoea as well.
Definitely yes. Appendicitis is a very serious condition, and in most cases, you will be advised to undergo an appendectomy as soon as possible - it is a surgery to remove your appendix.
However, if you are lucky enough, you might get better with antibiotics.
Appendicitis pain increases and gets intense as the inflammation worsens.
If left untreated, the inflamed appendix can burst, spilling toxic substance into your abdominal cavity. This can lead to further complications and even death.
Often, when people experience symptoms of appendicitis, they mistake it for gas, menstrual cramps, or a case of food poisoning. Please don’t make assumptions - visit a doctor and get yourself checked before it is too late.
