TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT [TMJ]

The temporomandibular joint,also called TMJ, acts like a sliding hinge.The joint is present in front of ears.TM joint is suspended by muscles & ligaments.There is one joint on each side of the jaw making movements of lower jaw in multiple directions.(Foward,backward,open,close,side to side etc)                                                                                                                     

TEMOPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDERS

TMDs refer to various painful & nonpainful conditions affecting the TMJ,muscles & associated tissue components.

Signs & Symptoms of TMJ disorder

  • Aching facial pain.
  • Neck pain.
  • Eye pain.
  • Shoulder pain radiating to arm
  • Locking of the joint (lock jaw),limited mouth opening accompanied
  • Clicking sound while opening & closing with or without pain
  • Pain in one or both temporomandibular joints/tenderness in jaw bone
  • Pain and around the ear.
  • Difficulty in chewing or pain while chewing.
  • Tooth pain that occurs along with jaw tenderness.
  • Grinding teeth at night (Sleep related movement disorder)

Treatment for TMJ disorders

Treatment of orofacial pain is acomplex process compounded by the density of anatomical structures.The gold standard for diagnosis of TMDs & Orofacial pain (pain in head,face & neck regions) is thorough history,examination & investigations.
