Some of you may have deposits of excess fat that make certain body areas appear disproportionately large - and you may wish you didn’t have it. You may have tried a lot of diets, exercise regimes to eliminate the stubborn fat in that specific area! For those of you who are bothered by this and are looking for a solution, we have just the one you need - LIPOSUCTION!
Dr Ramakrishnan Nair MS (Gen Surgery), Mch (Plastic Surgery) can tell you more about this procedure.
Liposuction is a type of fat removal procedure used in plastic surgery. It basically involves inserting a cannula (a slim, hollow tube) into one or more small incisions through which the tip penetrates the fat. A flexible tubing connected to a suction pump is linked to the cannula. As the surgeon moves the cannula back and forth, the fat is sucked into the tube.
It is one of the most effective procedures used for body contouring. It produces excellent results and leaves almost nil chances of disappointment!
People who are at or near their normal weight with good skin elasticity can achieve the best results through this procedure. If you have fat deposits in a specific area that does not go despite doing exercises and dieting, or if you’ve got it hereditarily - then you are a good candidate for liposuction.
Having said that, liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. So, if you’re looking for a treatment for obesity, you may have to go through other options such as bariatric surgery. Ananthapuri Hospitals has an excellent team of bariatric surgeons who can check if you’re a suitable candidate for bariatric surgery.
No. There are parts where liposuction is more effective for a few areas of the body than others.
Liposuction is most effective for the following areas of the body:
Liposuction is comparatively less effective for the calves and ankles. It may be necessary to wear compression garments longer in these areas due to swelling that may linger.
More caution needs to be taken while doing this procedure in the buttocks and the medial thigh areas as removing too much fat from here may make any excess skin - obvious.
Yes, liposuction does produce a fair amount of bruising and swelling. But the good news is - they become practically undetectable after healing has progressed - since incisions made during this procedure are usually located within the natural folds of the skin.
The incisions will vary between 1⁄8 and 1⁄2 inch depending on the technique used.
Compression garments are greatly helpful in controlling the swelling. Depending on the area, these are worn for two to three months, after which the swelling will steadily subside.
At around three months from treatment, your bruises would have faded and disappeared almost completely. Your sensation will also come back to its natural state.
You may return to non-strenuous work after a week and resume your daily activities after two to three weeks.
The difference will not be in your weight - but in your body contour! Fat tissue is not extremely dense or very heavy. Hence removing 3-5 litres of fat from your body will not result in a notable weight decline.
You will lose inches in the area of treatment and your clothes may fit you better.
Just like any surgery, liposuction also has risks like bleeding and infection associated with it. There is a life-threatening complication of fat embolism but it is very rare.
Occasionally there will be contour irregularities or mild asymmetry when comparing sides. This is more common in people who are overweight or have poor skin quality. The final result and contouring will be well appreciated after 3 months.

There are various techniques such as tumescent technique and Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty used in liposuction. Certain body areas respond to one technique better than the other. It is imperative that you choose a certified plastic surgeon to understand which is a suitable option for you.
