Pregnancy Implantation Bleeding - Ananthapuri Hospitals

Did you know bleeding could be an early sign of pregnancy? A light spotting may occur between 6 and 14 days after conception. Most people mistake it for their regular period. But it is actually a case of IMPLANTATION BLEEDING - one of the earliest clues that you are pregnant! Here is what it is:

When a fertilised egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, it causes light bleeding. You may notice a few drops of pinkish or light brown coloured blood in your underwear. Some women do not experience this and some may not notice it.

Implantation bleeding is completely normal and does not indicate a problem with your pregnancy. It stops on its own and does not need any medical intervention either.

Can I know if it’s implantation bleeding or just my periods? If yes, how?

Yes, it is possible to guess that it is implantation bleeding by examining the colour, amount of flow and by checking whether you are in your menstrual cycle. These are the things that you need to pay attention to -

Colour: The spotting you see during implantation bleeding may be lighter than what you see during your period. It is mostly pinkish or light brown in colour.

Flow: Implantation bleeding does not cause heavy flow. It is more like a discharge that leaves a few drops of blood.

If you have other noticeable symptoms such as frequent urination, fatigue, and nausea along with implantation bleeding, then you may be pregnant. Use a pregnancy test to confirm it.

If you experience heavy bleeding or severe pain during your early pregnancy, it may need to be addressed as soon as possible. Consult a doctor immediately.

When do I need to worry?

As discussed earlier, implantation bleeding is light and you may notice only a few drops of blood. Even though it is normal to experience light bleeding during early pregnancy, it is a good idea to talk to a doctor about any bleeding you experience during pregnancy as it can happen because of other reasons too. An infection, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy are other reasons that may cause bleeding during early  pregnancy.
