Diabetic Foot Care & Its Prevention - Ananthapuri Hospitals

People with diabetes are prone to foot problems that develop due to prolonged periods of high blood sugar levels. Excess sugar in the bloodstream causes damage to nerves in the feet.

Left uncontrolled or untreated, this may progress to numbness of your feet and leg and even insensitivity to pain. When this occurs, you may cut your feet easily and not know it. The cut often heals poorly, increasing the risk of being infected, which may ultimately result in amputation of the foot!!

How do I prevent diabetic foot?

Up to 85% of all diabetic-related foot problems are preventable. If you already have diabetes, follow these tips to prevent diabetic foot:

  • Examine your feet every day. Check for skin changes, blisters, cuts, or numbness and visit your doctor if you find any of those
  • Wash and dry your feet at least once a day. Make sure to clean and dry  the spaces between your toes, to prevent fungal infections of that area
  • Do not apply heating pads over your feet or place your feet close to a source of heat, especially during winter
  • Use proper footwear both indoors and outdoors. Wear proper-fitting shoes even when walking indoor on the carpet. Avoid wearing shoes without stockings
  • Wear clean stockings every day
  • Avoid wearing tight stockings and stockings that reach up to the knee
  • Examine and observe your shoes every day, checking for external objects that may cause injuries
  • Visit your doctor for all cases of foot infections or injuries to receive appropriate treatment. Do not treat them yourselves at home
  • Go to the clinic for a comprehensive foot exam once a year
  • Continuously monitor your blood sugar levels. Your doctor may modify or change your treatment accordingly
