Post Pregnancy Fat Shaming - Ananthapuri Hospitals, Trivandrum

It is surprising how desperate new mothers these days are on losing weight in the post-pregnancy period. But why blame them? The amount of body shaming that new mothers face is alarming!

Women, especially celebrities, are often subject to rude comments about their pregnancy induced weight gain. The moment a celebrity is sighted with a slight disfigurement post-pregnancy, the internet becomes swarmed with rude comments accusing her of taking less or no efforts to stay fit.

Our society puts an unrealistic pressure on women to fit into one very specific idea of attractiveness, even after having a body-transforming experience like giving birth to a baby. It’s time to turn a blind eye to shamers and celebrate your bodies! Because, why not?

This is to all those moms who unfortunately have to hear such seemingly-subtle-but-realistically-disturbing comments about their body

If you’re waiting to jump, run, skip or do whatever it takes to cut down that belly, here are a few things you need to understand:

  1. Firstly CONGRATULATE YOURSELF! Your body has successfully and safely taken you through a painful yet beautiful experience in life. Your body has given birth to a human being! Let that sink in.
  2. It is very important for you - new moms - to know that you need to maintain a well-balanced diet, similar to that while you were pregnant. Give your body some time to recover from the stress it went through during childbirth!
  3. Losing weight too quickly can not only harm your body in the long run but can also affect your breast milk supply
  4. Do not let yourself down and take hasty measures to cut down weight - no crash diets or excessive workouts. It is unhealthy for you AND the baby. Treat your body well and nurture it sufficiently
  5. Do not take diet pills as they contain harmful drugs that can be passed to your baby through breast milk
  6. Treat yourself with protein-rich foods such as milk, yoghurt, meat, fish, bottle gourd, and moringa leaves

If your weight is bothering you more than it should, consult a doctor. He/She may advise a safe exercise routine to begin with.

Accept your body the way it is. Understand that it is the way it is for a good reason. Do not pressurise yourself too much. With systematic workout and diet routines (as advised by the doctor), you can get back into shape, slowly but safely. Heed to your body cravings every now and then. Nobody knows your body better than you do!
