A few weeks back, we posted about ERCP - a diagnostic test to examine the conditions of the liver, bile ducts, pancreas or gallbladder.
Today, we are writing about a similar endoscopic procedure: Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
EUS is a procedure to examine the digestive tract and the surrounding tissue and organs, including the lungs.
Your doctor may ask you to do an EUS for a variety of reasons:
The procedure is performed under mild sedation.
During the procedure, your doctor passes a tube called an endoscope into your digestive track - this is inserted either through the mouth or through the rectum. The doctor monitors the insides of your body on a screen. Along with this, an ultrasound can also be taken for closer examination. If there are any suspicious masses, the doctor can also take small tissue samples through the endoscope.
No, it is a completely painless procedure.
A EUS procedure takes between 30 - 90 minutes.
During the EUS, your stomach and small bowel should be empty. So before the test, you can't eat for 6 to 8 hours. You may drink sips of water, but only up to 2 hours before the procedure.
Yes, you can go home on the same day. However, please remember that the sedation given during the procedure might take around 24 hours to completely go away, and you may feel drowsy. So do not travel alone. Arrange a friend or relative to pick you up from the hospital. Once you get home, take good rest until the sedation effects are worn off.
Endoscopic Ultrasound is a highly advanced and accurate scan that can identify information not seen in conventional scanning methods. Due to its accuracy, this procedure doesn’t have many alternatives.
